and the JIM MULLEN Trio
Saturday July 31st 7pm
Relax in the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre riverside garden for an evening with vocalist ZOE FRANCIS, well known for her take on the repertoire of iconic American singer Blossom Dearie, together with her trio featuring multi-award winning guitar legend JM MULLEN, pianist GARETH WILLIAMS, and MARIANNE WINDHAM on double bass.
“Zoe Francis… communicates a love and understanding of classic songs with an irresistable swing,” The Observer.
Zoe Francis started singing jazz while living and working in New York, and soon became a regular fixture on the scene, working with many musicians including Harry Allen, Warren Vache, Joe Cohn and Chris Flory. Her first album “Looking for a Boy”, with pianist David Newton, was released to significant acclaim, while her second, “The Very Thought of You”, recorded live with Gareth Williams, Stan Sulzmann and Jim Mullen, came out to similar plaudits. This was followed by “Remembering Blossom Dearie”, and her most recent recording “Blue Town”, which once again showcase her beautiful voice as well as her exquisite choice of material. With her love of the great songwriters of the 30’s and 40’s including Strayhorn, Mercer, Arlen and Van Heusen, Zoe’s knack for capturing her love and understanding of these songs brings them to life and elevates her performances to the truly exceptional.
Glasgow-born Jim Mullen is a guitarist whose career spans five decades. He has worked with US stars including Mose Allison, Gene Harris, Jimmy Smith, Teddy Edwards and Jimmy Withersppon. In the UK he has worked with Brian Auger, Georgie Fame and Claire Martin and had a fifteen year association with saxophonist Dick Morrissey in the Morrisey Mullen Band. He has recorded many CDs under his own name and currently works with his organ trio and wife, Zoe Francis.
Gareth Williams is one of the UK’s leading modern jazz pianists. A fiery and creative player, he won the British Jazz Awards in 2013. He has played with an impressive array of world-class artists, from Jazz/Hip Hop band “Us3” to jazz musicians such as Joe Lovano, Jerry Bergonzi, George Coleman and Jim Mullen. He has been MD for vocalist Claire Martin for many years.
“Something a bit special is going on when this artist takes the stage…a classy, poised singer” – LondonJazz News
“Jim Mullen’s guitar … is endlessly attractive…that unique soft-edged sound, the result of plucking the stings with his thumb, rather than a plectrum, and his way of turning a tune – any tune – this way and that to reveal unexpected beauties” The Guardian
