JAZZ VOCALIST OF THE YEAR 2018
“a masterly vocalist… one of the finest singers in contemporary music” – All About Jazz
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 18th 2019
St John’s Church, St. John’s Street,
Farncombe, Godalming, Surrey GU7 3EJ
Doors 7pm Performance 8pm
Distinctive and creative, Ian Shaw has been cited, along with Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling, as one of the world’s finest male jazz vocalists. Twice winner of the BBC Jazz Awards, and winner for Jazz Vocalist of the 2018 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, Ian has already amassed a number of highly acclaimed internationally released albums. His talent and technical ability is undeniable, which is coupled with the most engaging personality and an ability to make every song his own.
Described as “the voice of the decade” it is not by chance that he was the first British Jazz vocalist to be signed to American label, Milestone, which resulted in a number of highly acclaimed US recordings. A wry, witty and intelligent showman, Ian has an international reputation, including sell-out tours of the US, Canada and most recently Australia.
Collaborators over the years have included Quincy Jones, Abdullah Ibrahim, Guy Barker, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Iain Ballamy, Mornington Lockett, Barb Jungr, Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Cedar Walton, Joe Lovano, Joe Beck, Kurt Elling and many more.
We are delighted to welcome Ian to Guildford for our Christmas Concert on December 18th, with Kate Williams on piano, Dave Ohm on drums, and Marianne on double bass, for what promises to be an evening of rollercoaster musical emotion and non-stop entertainment.
‘…for musical sophistication and emotional intelligence Shaw and his trio leave most of their peers at the starting gate.’ ★★★★ The Telegraph
“An eye-watering vocal range and bucketloads of soul” – BBC
‘Shaw’s ability to…cut to the emotional heart of a song…remains astonishing.” ★★★★ Jazzwise

Finding Us / Parking / Rail Travel…..
St. John’s Church was built over 160 years ago and was extensively refurbished in 2012 with new seating, flooring and lighting. It has wonderful acoustics for all types of music as well as a unique atmosphere – described by some as Surrey’s own Union Chapel.
Situated in St. John’s Street right in the centre of the village just opposite the Co-op store, there are PUBLIC CAR PARKS within 5 minutes walk of the venue. We’d recommend parking in Meadrow (GU7 3HY), just off the A3100, the Guildford-Godalming road. It’s free in the evenings and it’s a short walk from the car park up Church Path , direct to the church.
There are also car parks in Station Road (GU7 3NF) and North Street (GU7 3HE)
Farncombe railway station is just 2 minutes walk from the venue. For rail travellers, Farncombe is on the London Waterloo – Portsmouth mainline. Trains are regular and journey times are London – 40 minutes and Portsmouth – 1 hour
