ALLISON NEALE QUARTET
“An Alto sound like brushed velvet…” – Jazz Review
Allison Neale – alto sax, Colin Oxley – guitar, Matt Fishwick – drums, Marianne Windham – bass
Unique on the UK jazz scene, American-born Allison Neale’s alto saxophone sound is instantly appealing. Her playing has the light wispy, airy quality from the “cool jazz”, West Coast school of Paul Desmond of which she is widely regarded as one of the finest exponents on today’s scene.
In her early years she performed alongside leading international artists such as Ellington vocalist Adelaide Hall and altoist Bud Shank and was a featured member of the John Dankworth ‘Generations Band’ and the ‘Back to Basie’ Orchestra.
Her most recent album “Quietly There” (Ubuntu Music, Sept 2020), was inspired by Allison’s love for the music and the musical partnership of Jim Hall and Paul Desmond, and who better to pay tribute to this partnership for her gig in Guildford than award winning guitarist Colin Oxley.
“It’s an alto saxophone sound rarely heard nowadays, cool but intimate, each phrase ending with a tiny shiver of vibrato, and no one deploys it with more delicacy or grace than Allison Neale. This is her musical voice, instantly recognisable, and it remains its calm, fluent self whatever the surroundings.” – Dave Gelly, The Observer ****
With food prepared by Mandira Kitchen, served to your table before the gig starts, for £10 per meal. Mandira’s Kitchen is a local independent catering company based at Silent Pool , and their food is guaranteed “truly scrumptious”!
