Surrey Young Jazz Musicians of the Year

Friday May 7th 2021 7.30pm

A concert to celebrating the up and coming young jazz talent from across Surrey, with performances from big bands, ensembles and individuals.

Young musicians are leading an exciting revival of jazz music in the UK and the Festival’s opening concert showcases some of the emerging young jazz talent from across Surrey.

This year’s finalists were:

  • Royal Grammar School Swing Band (Director Dr Ellie Thackrey)
  • Owl Vaccination Trio (Reuben Botha – tenor sax, Dermot Fowler – bass, Dominic Johnson – drums)
  • WAH5 Duo (Stan Lawrence – trumpet, Henry Forrest – piano)
  • ACS Jazz Messengers (Simon Ogundare – alto sax, Sam Wright – guitar, James King – bass, Mayan Patel – drums
  • Guildford County School Big Band (Director Dave Gale)
  • Henry Hanssen/Sam Dawes Trombone Duo
  • Jonny Ford (tenor sax), with Matt Carter (piano), Will Sach (bass), and Jack Thomas (drums).
